🌧️ Rainwater Harvesting for a Thriving Future

The Problem

Across Africa, millions face chronic water shortages.
Families rely on costly boreholes or unsafe water sources.
Drilling a single borehole can cost up to $25,000 — an amount completely out of reach for most communities.

Yet, a simple and affordable alternative exists: rainwater harvesting.

The Solution

At Umoja Greenlands, we offer a smart, accessible solution:
Installing 10,000-litre rainwater tanks at homes, schools, and community centers to capture and store rainwater for daily use.

Why it works:Low-cost — Only $900 per tank, up to 25 times cheaper than drilling boreholes
Easy maintenance — Simple systems with gutters, PVC pipes, and basic filtration
Sustainable — Taps into natural rainfall, preserving groundwater reserves

How It Works

1️⃣ Rainwater Collection
Gutters are installed on rooftops to channel rainwater directly into a secured tank.

2️⃣ Storage & Filtration
The collected water is safely stored and lightly filtered to ensure daily usability.

3️⃣ Community Training
Local residents receive training in basic maintenance, water conservation, and hygiene practices to maximize the impact.

🚰 First Installation Success in Karara, Kenya!

We are proud to announce the successful completion of our first 10,000-litre prototype tank in Karara community, located in Homa Bay County, Kenya.

This project was led by Ethan Ochieng, Community Leader of Karara and Director of Rainwater Solutions at Umoja Greenlands.

The Impact

🌍 Clean, safe water for entire communities — sustainably and affordably.

💧 One 10,000-litre tank serves up to 24 households (about 120 people) for 40 days after the rainy season, covering daily needs like drinking, cooking, cleaning, and farming.

🏡 Each tank supports hundreds of daily water needs, improving health, hygiene, and community well-being.

💰 Families save significant money by eliminating dependence on expensive or contaminated water.

🛑 Lives are saved — Each tank is estimated to help save between 10 to 30 lives over its lifetime, by preventing fatal waterborne diseases like cholera, typhoid, and diarrhea.

Eco-friendly and resilient — Harvesting rainwater protects natural groundwater resources and supports local climate adaptation.

❤️ Every tank installed is a lifeline — bringing health, security, and hope to African communities.
