“Water does not flow every day. A storage tank is our lifeline.
Even though we have a tap, water is not available daily in Kakuma Refugee Camp. In many cases, water is released only once per day, and sometimes the entire community depends on large central tanks. When the tap runs dry, everything stops.
A 10,000-litre storage tank will allow us to collect and conserve water when it is available, so we can keep serving the community during days when no water is supplied at all.
Please support us to urgently secure a water tank.
The situation on the ground is critical.”
WHO IS ASKING
This emergency request comes from Strong Unity for Refugee Empowerment (SURE/SHU), a refugee-led, community-based organization operating in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya, officially registered by the Government of Kenya and implementing programs that support education and livelihoods.
Umoja Greenlands is supporting this initiative to help protect community resilience and ongoing impact programs.

WHAT THE VIDEO SHOWS
From the field testimony recorded in Kakuma Refugee Camp:
The tap stand is often dry and water is increasingly unreliable.
The food trees and crops are drying out due to lack of water.
A previously used man-made well has become dry due to heat and sun exposure.
The community needs an emergency response now, and a durable solution to stabilize access to water.
“Everything is dry. Our crops are dying because of our lack of water.”
— Community representative, Strong Unity for Refugee Empowerment (SURE/SHU)
WHY THIS IS URGENT
“Lack of water has placed all our community projects at serious risk:
Our fish farm is in danger of collapse
Crop farming activities are failing
Education programs for children are repeatedly disrupted
Tree planting and environmental restoration efforts cannot survive
Hygiene and sanitation become impossible during shortages
Water is the foundation of every life-saving activity we run.”
WITHOUT WATER
Without water:
Food production stops
Education suffers
Environmental protection fails
Hope disappears
A single water tank will protect multiple projects and hundreds of beneficiaries by ensuring continuity, stability, and dignity.
The tank is not a luxury — it is a lifeline.
THE SOLUTION
We will install a 10,000-litre high-capacity water tank, connected to a safe water source and managed by trained community members.
This will ensure:
Consistent access to clean water
Reduced congestion at water points
Improved hygiene and sanitation
Long-term sustainability through community ownership
HOW THE WATER WILL BE USED
This water will be used for:
Irrigation (crops, food trees, kitchen gardens, permaculture)
Education support (clean water for children and learning spaces)
Daily community use and hygiene
This protects both lives and the work already invested into community resilience.
PROJECT ACTIVITIES
Project activities include:
Procurement of a 10,000L water tank
Construction of a secure elevated support structure
Installation of plumbing pipes, taps, and drainage
Setup of water treatment / filtration system
Community training on maintenance and hygiene management
BUDGET
Total project cost: 185,000 KES
Budget breakdown:
10,000L water tank (including transport): 98,000 KES
Support structure and foundation: 40,000 KES
Plumbing and fittings: 18,000 KES
Water treatment system: 15,000 KES
Skilled labor: 14,000 KES
(Community contribution in-kind where possible.)
EXPECTED IMPACT
This intervention will:
Provide safe clean water to hundreds of refugees
Reduce waterborne diseases, especially among children
Improve school attendance and learning conditions
Reduce time spent fetching water by women and girls
Strengthen dignity, stability, and community resilience
SUSTAINABILITY
To ensure long-term success:
Community members will be trained to manage and maintain the system
Local leadership will oversee daily use and protection
Small community contributions will support minor repairs
The large capacity tank increases reliability during shortages
CALL TO ACTION

Your support today will not only provide water — it will:
Protect investments already made
Preserve lives and dignity

Project Update — First Water Tank Installed 💧
We are happy to share an important milestone in the Kakuma Refugee Camp water response.
With the support of our partners and community solidarity, a 5,000-litre emergency water storage tank has now been successfully purchased and installed.
Contributions
Umoja Greenlands contributed 25,000 KES — approximately 50% of the tank cost
The community secured the tank for 48,000 KES total
Installation was fully supported by MEMA Solidarity (MEMA Solidarity NGO) — an organization advocating for the rights and participation of refugees and marginalized communities
The tank is now operational and already providing relief.
Message from the Community (Strong Unity for Refugee Empowerment – SURE)
“We want to express our deepest gratitude for your support and kindness.
Thanks to you we have finally received the water tank and this is a huge relief for our community.
In a place like Kakuma where water is life this support means dignity hope and protection for children women and families.
Your solidarity has turned a difficult situation into a moment of joy and renewed strength.
We promise to use this support responsibly to serve those who need it most.”
— Strong Unity for Refugee Empowerment (SURE)
What This Means
This first tank immediately helps:
Stabilize daily water access
Protect crops and food trees
Support children’s learning environment
Improve hygiene and safety
Reduce emergency vulnerability
However, the need remains significant — water supply is still unreliable and additional storage capacity is required to fully protect community programs.
This installation is therefore a critical first step, not the final solution.
